Annual Report 2024
At the MetroHealth Simulation Institute, our drivers include the following:
Promote clinical excellence; support interprofessional collaboration; advance quality and safety; foster healthcare equity; develop and refine clinical processes; and foster regional contributions and national reputation.
“The team always creates value we did not expect.”
- Nick Dreher, MD
As you will see, the Simulation Institute’s commitment to continuous improvement has led us to expand our reach increasing learners and departments. The Simulation Institute is an exceptional educational institution providing opportunities to learn and improve. One key strength of the Simulation Institute is the extensive reach and ability to provide education to learners system wide. Our approach to interdisciplinary education sets us apart, fostering critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
The Simulation Institute serves as a crucial support system for interprofessional education, fostering collaboration and learning among healthcare professionals from different disciplines. Through our immersive simulations the Simulation Institue enables all healthcare professionals the opportunity to understand the unique prospectives, roles, and contributions of each profession. Learners are able to develop essential skills in communication, teamwork, and decision-making while learning from each other.
Promote Clinical Excellence
Our hands on approach helps learners to bridge the gap between theory and practice, leading to improved patient outcomes, reduction in medical errors and increased overall confidence in skills. Our learners are provided with:
Deliberate practice in a safe environment
Direct observation
Immediate feedback
Develop, refine and maintain skills
Employ best practices
Exceed national standards
The chart below shows the wide-reaching simulation courses offered and reflects the strong commitment to education across disciplines and skill levels. The Simulation Institute is committed to providing relevant and engaging content that has a positive impact on the professional development and growth of each learner.
The MetroHealth Simulation Institute is a leading interprofessional resource serving our system, and region with an array of multimodal simulation-based programming focused on safety and quality in healthcare delivery. Communication and teamwork deficiencies are closely related to most threats and harms across the healthcare system. Observational studies have documented the prevalence of such harms, and interventional studies have led to some limited success. By leveraging multidisciplinary simulation-based methodology coupled with systems engineering principles, we follow the data, continue to work with quality and safety to reach all system goals.

Process Development & Optimization
Simulations and tabletop exercises are powerful tools used to improve and optimize processes. The Simulation Institute is able to provides these controlled environments to test and analyze various scenarios helping departments and the system as a whole identify and address potential issues, enhance decision-making capabilities and optimize resources.
The Simulation Institute has provided these resources to the following programs:
Glick Center transition & activation
Behavioral Health Hospital transition & activation
Code Blue, Code Pink, Code STEMI
ED - START
Virtual Care
Failure Mode Effects Analysis
Hosptial in the Home
Sickle Cell - HITH
Discharge Hospitality Center
Looking Forward
The Simulation Insititute is committed to the continued focus on quality and patient safety throughout the system. Our focus moving forward will be increasing our collaborations with stakeholders and working towards the development of the MetroHealth Center for Learning Excellence (MH-CLE). Through this collaboration we aim to create an environment that fosters continuous growth and improvement allowing us to continue to improve the quality of our training programs. We are able to incorporate the quality initiatives within our simulations and align our efforts with the system goals. With our deliberate approach we adapt to the changing needs of the system and deliver the highest standard of education and support to our learners.

“The MSI is such an amazing resource that we are fortunate to have at The MetroHealth System. Everyone who works for and supports the MSI (technicians, administrative assistants, director, etc) are easy to work with, and you can tell that they take pride in their work. It is apparent that they enjoy what they do and have a passion for teaching.”
— Biennial Survey Feedback
“Sim Center has been one of the best aspects of working with MH! This is a gem, run very well, highly appreciated and valuable to all of MH!”
